Alexis met Jen Knopf in 2021 and has been cheering on the REED Charitable Foundation™ from the sidelines ever since. She’s thrilled to trade her pom-poms for pencils as she joins the Structured Literacy Team.
With over 20 years in education, Alexis has taught in various capacities within the public school system, Montessori classrooms, and non-traditional schools. She’s supported diverse learners and has been lucky to learn from some fierce child-advocates. She holds a Master of Education from Rollins College and certifications in ESE, Reading, ESOL, Gifted, and Art. She’s an Associate Level member of the Orton Gillingham Academy; she’s very serious about making sure kids learn to read—and enjoy it.
Alexis’ structured literacy journey began when an extended family member was diagnosed with dyslexia. Within the same timeframe, she realized something deeply troubling: despite good intentions and lots of professional development, too many students were still struggling to become confident readers. Enter Orton Gillingham, a training experience that rocked her pedagogical world and redefined how she thinks about teaching reading.
Alexis believes in nurturing the whole child with creativity, compassion, and the occasional corny joke. When she’s not working with RCF, she’s helping neurodynamic learners build social skills at Social Bridges, where she co-facilitates groups designed to help kids discover the superpowers they didn’t know they had.
In the words of Frederick Douglass, “reading is freedom”—and Alexis is all in on helping teachers help kids unlock that power with RCF, one phoneme at a time.
